Air conditioning is just for cooling, isn't it? Well, yes, but that's only a part of the story.

Modern air conditioning systems are split-type heat pump systems, which can also be used for heating. But how exactly do they work? And what are the pros and cons of using air conditioning for heating? You can read about it in this blog post.

Air conditioning for heating: the tale of Julie and David

Julie and David bought a detached property built in the 1960s, which they completely renovated. Both the living areas and bedrooms were originally heated by an electric system. They replaced this with an energy-efficient, easy-to-use Daikin split-type heat pump system. David: "Choosing a split-type heat pump system was an easy decision. Firstly, because of its exceptionally low consumption. Secondly, due to its high level of comfort, including its responsiveness and the ability to both heat and cool. Our rooms heat up in just ten minutes in winter. In summer, we can cool the rooms within a few minutes." To power the heat pump system, the couple also had solar panels installed on their roof. “Thanks to our solar panels, we’ve significantly reduced our energy heating and air conditioning costs,” they happily say.

Heating and cooling by harnessing cold air

Air conditioning systems capable of both cooling and heating are known as heat pump systems. They transfer heat from one environment to another using a refrigerant. Innovative split-type heat pump systems are an environmentally friendly way to extract heat from the air. For example, in summer, air conditioning systems can be used to cool the rooms in your home. The heat from inside is expelled outside. In winter, this process is reversed. The heat pump system extracts heat from the outside air, even at temperatures as low as -15 °C, and releases it indoors to heat the property.

The advantages of heating with air conditioning

If you decide to buy an air conditioning system, you may want it to do more than simply cool or heat the air. A modern air conditioner creates an ideal indoor climate. The best air conditioning units even filter the air to remove harmful or irritating particles such as pollen. Such integrated systems offer many advantages: A single outdoor unit can be connected to several indoor units. Each indoor unit can then be controlled individually, achieving optimal temperatures in each room. Compact heat pump systems are easy to install. They can even be installed in properties with limited space. Advanced Inverter and heat pump technologies ensure optimal efficiency and maximum energy savings. You'll soon notice it in your wallet! Air conditioning units come in various models, such as wall-mounted or floor-standing. You're sure to find a unit that perfectly fits your indoor space.

The disadvantages of heating with air conditioning

When carrying out renovation work, a split-type heat pump system cannot be connected to existing heat distribution systems such as radiators or underfloor heating. If you wish to retain these, they can be combined with an air-to-water heat pump system. It's also important to note that you can connect up to five indoor units to one outdoor unit in a split-type heat pump system. Do you want to cool and heat more rooms? Consider opting for a different system, such as an air-to-water heat pump.

How much does air conditioning with heating cost?

The price of an air conditioning unit capable of both cooling and heating depends on several factors, including the number and type of indoor units, capacity, and available features. Contact an installer in your area to get a detailed quote. Tip: If you're renovating and have a heat pump system installed, you may be eligible for a grant.
